The Journey

East Africa’s Golden Savannahs

This is Kenya at full breadth: the rare and wild north, the highland conservancies of Laikipia, and the world-famous plains of the Maasai Mara in peak season. Three distinct ecosystems across ten days, each with its own rhythm and wildlife cast.

Designed for travelers who want to experience the full range of what Kenya has to offer in a single journey – without rushing. Private guiding ensures each region is felt, not just visited.

Day by Day

Your Itinerary

Each day is presented in order, with the exact timing adjusted around flights, wildlife movement, and guest pace.

01

Nairobi Arrival and Journey Brief

Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your overnight property. Evening briefing with your Vard Africa guide covering the full 10-day arc, wildlife targets by region, and what to expect in each ecosystem.

02

Fly to Samburu - Arrival in the North

Morning flight from Wilson Airport to Samburu National Reserve. Afternoon game drive introduces the northern frontier landscape - dry riverbeds, doum palms, and the distinctive wildlife that defines this ecosystem. First Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe sightings.

03

Full Day in Samburu

Full day in Samburu focused on the Northern Special Five: gerenuk feeding upright on acacia tips, beisa oryx crossing open floodplain, Somali ostrich in pairs, Grevy's zebra at the river, and reticulated giraffe in the shade. Morning and afternoon drives with a midday break.

04

Samburu Culture and Final River Drive

Morning drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River where leopards are frequently seen in fig trees and large elephant families drink. Optional afternoon community visit to a Samburu village. Evening storytelling session with a local guide on the culture and ecology of northern Kenya.

05

Fly to Laikipia - Highlands and Conservation

Morning flight south to Laikipia Plateau. Afternoon game drive across a private conservancy at altitude. The landscape shifts dramatically from Samburu's arid lowland to Laikipia's cool highland ranches. First rhino sightings expected.

06

Laikipia Walking Safari and Wild Dog Tracking

Early morning walking safari with a senior ranger. Midday wild dog tracking exercise using guide intelligence and radio communication. Afternoon drive targeting elephants, zebra, and reticulated giraffe which also range here.

07

Rhino Conservation and Night Drive

Morning with conservation staff on rhino protection and monitoring. Afternoon rest and optional camel trek. Post-dinner night drive targeting pangolin, aardvark, and active leopard - rare opportunities made possible by private conservancy access.

08

Fly to Maasai Mara - First Migration Drive

Morning flight south to the Maasai Mara ecosystem. Arrive in time for an afternoon migration drive across open savannah. The scale of the Great Migration - wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle in vast moving columns - creates an immediate and powerful contrast to the north.

09

Full Migration Day - River Crossings and Predators

Full day in the Mara ecosystem positioned at river crossing sites. This is the peak of the migration season and the density of wildlife and predator activity is extraordinary. Private conservancy access in the evening for night drive and a farewell bush dinner.

10

Final Morning Drive and Return to Nairobi

Last dawn drive before transferring to the Mara airstrip. Fly back to Nairobi for international connections or a coast extension. Debrief with your guide over a final lunch at the airport lodge.
